Mom Knows Best

Wednesday, August 10, 2022 | Sports

Did you know Danny White, the former Dallas Cowboys QB plays the piano? It's true! I once read an interview with Danny White in which he talked about his mother's influence on his piano playing. He talked about resisting piano lessons and begging his mother to let him quit. His mom agreed to let him quit taking lessons as long as he played the piano every day for his own pleasure. Which he still does every day. I wanted to know more so I reached out:

Rosalyn,

I was forwarded your message and that is a true story. I took lessons from 5 years of age until 13. My Mom was relentless. Piano practice ALWAYS came before anything else after school. However, the "rest of the story" is that when I joined the Dallas Cowboys as a rookie we had a very progressive Strength and Conditioning Coach who always used the most innovative training methods. He had a device that flashed pictures on a screen that depicted two hands and two feet and we were to hit paddles that were attached to the screen and to each hand and foot, indicated on the screen as quickly as we could and see how many we could get correctly in a minute. After the first time I did it he looked at me and said, "You play the Piano don't you?"  His point was that when you play the piano you look at images on a screen and transfer them to your hands and feet and the quicker you can do it the better piano player you are. That process is exactly the same as playing Quarterback or any sport for that matter. You see something, your brain processes it and it sends messages out to your body and you "react" to what you see. Two important points to learn from this.........playing a musical instrument CAN make you a better athlete and............Mom always knows best.

Don't Miss Music in the Park!

Tuesday, July 6, 2021 | Events

One my FAVORITE things about a dreamy Utah summer is the party on every corner! It seems like people are always going to get ice cream/shaved ice/soda or going to a parade or meeting friends at a park filled with shady trees. If this is you, be sure to catch our super casual, super free, super fun music party this summer -- for kids of all ages -- only in July! xo

Thursdays in July at 11:15-11:45 in the Mapleton City Park

Spoiling Our Students Was a Lot of Fun!

Saturday, May 1, 2021 | Spirit Week, Drum Bus

Our first annual Student Appreciation event was a lot of fun! It was great to see everyone who turned out for the Drum Bus and stayed to play some games and win some prizes. At the end, after most of our friends left, the teachers hopped on the bus for some beats with Mike Liston. It was really fun to learn some new rhythms, play them opposite each other, and discover organic rhythms that naturally flowed as we improvised together. I asked Mike to share some of his experiences working with kids in school settings and he shared some touching stories of kids who developed skills over a semester's time and how he was able to reach some kids as they relaxed and learned to play as a team and self-express on the drums. I especially enjoyed working with the other teachers in our area. Sending shout outs to:

Jennette Kilgrow from Springville for keeping the balloons going and helping out in the puppet show room, Kathy Nelson from Salem for running the music games and puppet shows in the studio, Melodie Weston from Springville for running the prize spinner and music game booth, Lauren Pollock from Mapleton for organizing people waiting for a turn on the Drum Bus, Amy Clements from Spanish Fork for running the Balloon Booth and helping out wherever she was needed, and my amazing husband and best friend, Sam, for cooking all the hot dogs!

Enjoy some of pics of our Drum Day and hope to see you all again next year!
